About Coastlands Plant Nursery

New Zealand’s National Coastal Sand Dune Revegetation Centre

We are New Zealand’s National Coastal Sand Dune Revegetation Centre, we stock foredune and back dune plant species, specialising in propagating, growing and supplying quality eco-sourced native plants for sand dune replenishment and coastal erosion.

Our team qualifications include, 1 National Diploma in Horticulture, 3 Trade Certificates (advanced ) in Nursery Production, 2 First Aid certificates, 2 Growsafe Approved Handler Certificates and total of 54 years accumulative in the nursery industry.

You'll find us nestled in the Eastern Bay of Plenty less than a kilometre from the beach in Whakatane, New Zealand, where we have been supplying coastal plants for 14 years from Northland to Bluff, and approximately producing 500,000 plants annually.

Specially built facilities allow us to propagate , grow and supply coastal natives for large environmental projects, Coastcare groups, councils and private landowners throughout NZ

Plants can be grown to order or purchase as you need, in any container you require but we recommend Root-trainers (RTH &RTT) these are trays that encourage roots to go down the container instead of around, this gives an advantage when planting as plants are ready to go deep for sand moisture quickly.

Eco-sourcing is a huge part of our operation as we believe that there are regional differences in plant species this is evident in the Spinifex with the East and West sourced plants looking different even grown in the same conditions in the nursery situation.

If you wish your plants to be eco-sourced we have a rigorous tracking system to ensure the seed you send is returned to you as plants 12-18 months later.

Planting season for dune plants is roughly (depending on which coast) April to October, plants can be ordered to secure numbers before planting commences. If ordered before Christmas for the following year there is a price discount, and a discount also applies to those who send their own seed.

If you need more information about seed collection in your area, please don't hesitate to call us, seed collection season is between December and March.

“Having purchased nearly 500,000 plants from Coastlands Native Plant Nursery I feel well qualified to comment on their performance. Jo, Wendy and the team provide exceptionally friendly, prompt and professional service, and the quality of their plants is second to none (especially the kowhangatara/spinifex). I have already recommended them to many others working on coastal restoration projects.”
